How Custom Engagement Rings Work: Process, Cost, and Timeline

A custom engagement ring is built in two halves: you choose a center diamond, then a setting is cast specifically around that diamond and the wearer's finger size. There is no inventory ring pulled off a shelf — the metal is poured for your stone. Here is exactly how that works, what it costs, and how long it takes.

How does designing a custom engagement ring work, step by step?

Designing a custom ring is five steps: choose the center diamond, choose the setting style, choose the metal and finger size, the setting is cast to order around your diamond, and a gemologist reviews the diamond before it is set. Start to shipment is 8–12 business days.
  1. Choose the center diamond — lab grown or natural, the shape, and the carat weight. See diamond prices by shape and size.
  2. Choose the setting style — solitaire, hidden halo, pavé, three-stone, or halo (compared below).
  3. Choose metal and finger size — platinum, 18K or 14K in white, yellow, or rose.
  4. The setting is cast to order — every element is proportioned to your exact diamond and finger size.
  5. A gemologist reviews the diamond before setting, then the finished ring ships from the Los Angeles atelier.

How long does a custom engagement ring take to make?

8–12 business days from order to shipment. Because each setting is cast to order rather than pulled from stock, the time is in the casting, setting, and quality review — not in waiting for inventory.

How much does a custom engagement ring cost versus a ready-made one?

A custom ring is priced as two parts: the center diamond plus the setting. Setting prices start around $2,395 for a simple solitaire and rise with design complexity. Custom does not mean a premium over ready-made — you pay for the diamond and the setting, not for a marked-up finished piece sitting in a case.

The center diamond is the larger variable. For current diamond prices by shape, size, and type, see the diamond price guide.

How do I choose a setting style?

Match the setting to how much sparkle and detail you want around the center diamond. Simpler settings (solitaire) put all the attention on the stone; more detailed settings (halo, pavé, three-stone) add diamonds and complexity.

Setting families compared. Starting prices are for the setting only; the center diamond is separate. RockHer, May 2026.

How do I choose the center diamond?

Decide type first (lab grown or natural), then balance carat against the 4Cs to fit your budget. Shape changes both price and how large the diamond looks on the finger.

What can go wrong with a custom engagement ring, and how is it prevented?

The two real risks are a diamond that does not match expectations and a setting that does not fit. Both are controlled here: the diamond is certified and reviewed by a gemologist before setting, and the setting is cast to the exact finger size rather than resized after the fact.

Custom engagement ring FAQ

Is a custom ring more expensive than a ready-made one?

Not inherently. You pay for the center diamond and the setting. There is no markup for a finished piece held in inventory.

Can I use my own diamond?

The standard process is choosing a certified diamond and having the setting cast around it. Contact RockHer for other arrangements.

How long does it take?

8–12 business days from order to shipment, made in the Los Angeles atelier.

Can the ring be resized later?

Cast-to-order settings reduce the need for resizing because the band is built to size. Resizing afterward is possible for most plain or partially-paved bands; full eternity-style bands are harder to resize without rework.
